Pablo Picasso Clown et écuyère (Clown and Horseman), from Verve Nos 29 and 30 is a lithograph printed after a crayon drawing by Picasso for Verve magazine. Verve, also called “The Review of Art and Literature”, was issued regularly in France from 1937-1960. The magazine focused on artists’ and their personal take on issues of the time. The fall 1954 Verve was focused on Picasso. One of his submissions for the magazine is pictured here.

A clown sits in a chair with hands bound and legs crossed at the ankles. To his left is a large blue horse with a well-groomed mane. Standing with one arm around the horse is a poised rider. The lithograph is rendered in wonderful orange, olive green, and different shades of blue, along with additional black and gray.

Created in 1954, this color lithograph on wove paper is hand signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the bottom left; numbered from the edition of 75 in the lower right; published by Verve; printed by Mourlot, Paris.
