Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Motifs No. 7, 1963 is a mesmerizing work which showcases the artist’s masterful use of color and creative sensibilities. Over a white background, droplets of red and blue glaze are methodically placed in a circular fashion. The artist creates gentle, wispy black leaves growing from the delicate limbs of a white plant over these droplets. The limbs are connected by a single circular branch that hovers over the center of the work. The branch serves as a window into a nonrepresentation form which beautifully contrasts the rest of the work. In the center, bold black and red contours create a form that, in its abstraction, evokes an aura of sacrality and wonder. The work’s circular form and radial symmetry hypnotize the viewer, drawing them into the enthralling composition that Picasso has so expertly designed. The work effuses a lively, yet soothing, energy that encourages the viewer’s eye to dance about the composition. A black glaze border defines the outer rim of the work, serving to contain the ethereal and animated composition.

Created in 1963, this Madoura round plate of white earthenware clay with decoration in engobes and enamel (black, blue, red) is knife engraved under glaze. From the edition of 150, this work is inscribed 'Edition Picasso' and 'Madoura' on the reverse.
