Marc Chagall Vision de Paris, 1952; The largest in a set of eight lithographs created for publication in two special editions of Verve, the Vision de Paris depicts a playfully romantic city (Cain, 122). The red crescent moon turns into an embracing couple flying high over the Eiffel tower on a bird who turns to dive back to earth. A vision of the artist with hand raised to easel floats in front of the city's buildings and people. Pockets of dark brown, blood red, egg yolk yellow, and grass green jump off the page. "Paris reflection of my heart," writes Chagall on a black and white lithograph from the same series, "I would dissolve there, never to be alone with myself" (Ibid.). His Paris becomes ours, a place for love and colorful life.
Created in 1952, this work is hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint -Paul, 1985) in black ink in the lower right and labeled an épreuve d'artiste or "artist's proof" (aside from the numbered edition of 75) in pencil in the lower left corner.
