Historical Description

Marc Chagall’s Les Fleurs Rouges (Red Flowers), 1973 exemplifies one of Chagall’s numerous depictions of a blooming floral bouquet. Pops of crimson intermingled with dark green fill the upper middle area of the composition, as the green tapers down into a vertical rectangle that evokes the outline of a vase. A male figure and female figure rise from the lower right corner of the image, the former reaching an arm over the chest of the latter. Just above the embracing couple is the outline of a bird, an iconic motif in Chagall’s pictorial imagery. To the left, the cropped corner of a window expands the sense of space and depth in the composition. The layering and varied weight of the lines, particularly in the bouquet and the window, add textural complexity and movement to an otherwise static subject. Marc Chagall’s Les Fleurs Rouges (Red Flowers), 1973 compliments and deepens the simple pleasure of a beautiful bouquet through the romantic passion of a couple’s embrace.
