The figure of Chloe resides towards the bottom left of the composition, which visually conveys the protagonist’s emotional isolation as she watches Daphnis garner attention from other women. Chloe’s figure is also rendered in a brilliant red, the same color used to denote this protagonist throughout much of Chagall’s Daphnis et Chloé series. Such a vibrant color draws attention to her figure despite the fact that she is off-center in this composition.
