Conveying a romantic sensibility within an ethereal environment, Chagall creates a truly stunning piece in Marc Chagall La Lune dans le Bouquet (The Moon in the Bouquet), 1971. A couple at the center of the composition appears as if floating in air, their figures forming an elegant C-Shaped curve as the man envelopes the woman in a loving embrace. To the right, a vibrant green crescent moon rests in the midst of a luscious bouquet colored in vivid hues of blue and green while, to the lower left, a small figure lays down upon the grass, gazing up at those above him. An unusually small house rests just above this reclining figure's head, further contributing to the surreal feel of this work in which all the figures appear charmingly disproportionate in size. Chagall utilizes cool, soothing hues to relay an impression of quiet and calm, inviting the viewer to enter his whimsical world where anything seems possible.
Created in 1971, this work is hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered 46/50 in pencil in the lower left margin from the edition of 50 (aside from 15 artist's proofs).
