Marc Chagall Pastorale, c. 1978 is a stunning gouache, watercolor and black crayon on Rives paper with a lush and blossoming bouquet as the centerpiece of the composition. This quintessential image boasts the hallmarks we adore about Chagall's work; gorgeous coloration, whimsical imagery, folkloric symbolism, and the evocation of romantic love. While the dominant color of this work is blue, vibrant reds and yellow punctuate the blossoms of the lush floral arrangment. Placed in an idyllic, pastoral setting, a pair of lovers recline below the larger than life flowers. In the distance, a village is faintly defined in blue peaked roofs, while in the foreground animals and human figures signify the bliss of rural life. The archetypal environment at once represents the artist's past and present, the Russian landscape of Chagall's youth and the countryside of St Paul de Vence, where the artist settled with his second wife Valentina in his later life.
Created in c. 1978, this unique original gouache, watercolor and black crayon on Rives paper is stamped with the signature ‘Marc Chagall’ in the lower left.
