A wonderful breakout work from the Bible series, Marc Chagall Moses Receiving the Ten Commandments, is soft and expressive. The perfected tones of foggy grays and blacks allow for the colorful green and yellow to shine through, drawing the eye to the important piece of the composition: the ten commandants which are highlighted in a sunny yellow. Within a relatively gray composition, the light that pours upon the ten commandments, making them appear heavenly. Chagall manages to create exquisite texture in the etching, making the rocks appear very lifelike and the sky look stormy with slashing strokes across the page. As Moses receives the definitive guide by which life is to be lived, Chagall portrays him in such an iconic form of grace and purpose that it reminds us he is human. A captivating and charismatic work, it brilliantly displays Chagall’s masterful skill in creating expressive compositions.
