Historical Description

Miró Pl. 5 from Les Voyants (The Seers), 1970 was created shortly after the death of Louis Broder, the publisher. Broder and Miró began working together in 1956 and created four highly desirable lithograph series together. Broder actively interacted with artists of the 20th century to interpret literary works through a diverse range of media. Joan Miró’s “Seers” are amongst the most magical and surreal lithographs from this collaboration. Traditionally, seers are clairvoyant beings able to foresee the future. In several of the lithographs from this suite, one can see Miró’s handprints boldly imprinted onto the page as a reference to palm reading. Specific to this work, whirling colors and strokes combine to form a mysterious face. The face, encircled in black circles, appears curious with its eyes staring widely to the side. In the background, the energetic colors create a texture which enhances the appearance of the figure in the center. One may interpret this as a representation of the struggle between body and spirit. Overall, this colorful, vibrant work demonstrates the power of the artist’s hand in creating magic and charm.

Created in 1970, this color lithograph is hand-signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right. Numbered from the edition of 75 in pencil in the lower left; printed by Mourlot, Paris and published by Broder, Paris.
