Historical Description

Joan Miró L'Illetré— Verte et Violet, 1969 is aesthetically a visual representation of Miro’s artistic mastery, a strong impression with bold colors that weave a world full of wonder. The background, a solid and opaque teal, houses a composition that draws the eye. One can clearly witness the exuberance of Miró's bold strokes and the mastery of his technique in the transparency of purple atop the continuous white design that circles around the composition. A subtle, translucent layer of splattered forest green sits underneath the bold lines, contrasting the purple and white which allows for the two colors to pop and stand boldly. Flecks of white paint are sprinkled around the fluid lines, centering the work while the unambiguous lines of a lighter opacity violet flow across the page, interweaving and interacting with the entirety of the image. The artist's ability to interrelate subject matter and abstracted representation reflect his mastery of modern graphic art. Miro once stated that one of his major objectives as an artist was to arrest the viewer’s attention and his use of contrasting colors effectively accomplishes this affect.
