Historical Description

Joan Miró Les Essències de la Terra (The Essences of the Land), 1968 is a foray into a Miró’s colorful imagination of abstract figures and symbols. Part of Les Essències de la Terra series, he creates a wonderful collection of repeated imagery to compose a powerful work. Layered upon a bright pictorial field of playful colors, one can see bold and black motifs. Consisting of a striking circle, a comma, a period, and a musical note, the iconography is powerful. These recurring gestures are a precise trademark of Joan Miró. Combined with beautiful and deliberate non-objective forms, lines, and poetic lyricism, this work presents a brilliant synthesis of Miro’s artistic reinterpretation of patterns and gestural deductions of poetry.

Created in 1968, this lithograph with hand-coloring on Japon nacré paper is hand signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right. This work is numbered from the edition of 100 and 8 color variations touched up by hand. Published by Ediciones Poligrafa, Barcelona and printed by Mourlot, Paris.
