Historical Description

Created in 1969 this original color lithograph is hand signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma, 1983) in white pencil in the lower right. Numbered from the edition of 75 in white pencil in the lower left and printed by Arte Adrien Maeght imprimeur, published by Maeght éditeur, Paris.

Saturating the entire page with a deep blue, Miro presents an animated character with discernable eyes and a grinning mouth. The tones of orange, yellow, and white explode towards the viewer, lending a sense of energy and movement to the work. Offering a narrative impetus, Miro's title sparks the imagination. "Pitting poet against craftsman, Miro's varied strategies aim, more often than not, at surprising existing aesthetic orders by discovering possibilities latent within them" (Lancher, 74).
