Historical Description

Joan Miró Hommage à Miró, 1972 comes alive with bright centers of color and luxurious texture. Rich and bold black figures dance across the canvas, a typical mark of Miró’s work. They look smooth to the touch and provide a delightful contrast to the textured background. Using primarily blue, red, and yellow, Miró adds patches of color to the composition. Concentric circles give the appearance of eyes, and suddenly the abstract shapes take on a new element. The joy of this lithograph is that the shapes have feelings, partially brought on by the physical form, but added to by the appearance of human-like eyes that look out at the viewer invitingly. Much of Miró’s work confounds and delights in this way – always leaving the viewer wondering what exactly they are looking at.

Created in 1972, this color lithograph on Arches vellum is hand signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right margin. This edition is numbered from the 75 in pencil in the lower left margin; published by XXe Siècle, Paris; printed by Arte Adrien Maeght, Paris.
