Historical Description

Featuring the organic line work and flowing forms that characterize the artist’s signature style, Joan Miró Atmosfera, 1959 possesses an unusually expansive color palette for the artist. Patches of soft orange, lime green, and rusty red swirl around the central swath of pastel blue, intermingling with a network of black and white lines and dollops. A grayish-tan loop contains this collection of colors and surrounds the pastel blue patch in the middle. Swirls of white play within a capsule-like black form in the lower right corner of the composition, while a solid black circular form with long protrusions sticking out of it at regular intervals lies in the upper left corner. Such layering of color creates a sense of depth in a composition devoid of perspective. The title Atmosfera, 1959 encourages a connection between the cosmos and the composition of the work with its overlapping colors and forms, which visually evoke the dynamic movement of outer space.

Created in 1959, Joan Miró Atmosfera, 1959 is a color lithograph. This work is hand-signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma De Maiorca, 1983) in the lower right and numbered from the edition of 160.
