Historical Description

Joan Miró Arlequin Tourneur (Whirling Harlequin), 1980 evokes a lively sense of harmony through brilliant tones juxtaposed with harsh dark tones to create a work of divine artistic mastery. Bursting with color, this fruitful work expands Miro’s oeuvre with intersecting forms as textured lines are deliberately streaked throughout the arrangement. Not limiting his use of color to simply filling in the negative space, the artist outlines sections of the amorphous form with the myriad of tones, geometric shapes intertwined into the cacophony of black mass that keeps the composition cohesive. Alternating primary colors allow the work to maintain its vivacity as it engages with the negative space. Bundles of small dots, splatters, and fine line scribbles surround the figure, motifs defined to guide the eye through the crevices to circumvent the sharp contrast between the dynamic palette against the white negative space.

Created in 1980, this color lithograph on Arches wove paper is hand signed by Joan Miró (1893 – 1983) in pencil in the lower right margin. This work is numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the bottom left margin.  Printed and published by Maeght, Paris.
