Historical Description

This work, entitled L'Enragé (The Enraged), showcases Joan Miró’s skill with using color and shape to create a composition that is both balanced and captivating. Using his classic thick black lines to form abstract shapes in the center of the canvas, Miró counteracts the heaviness of this choice by leaving the background of the upper part of the composition white. With pops of primary red, blue, yellow and just a peek of rich green, the viewer’s eye bounces around the work, soaking in every detail. This work is full of emotion, as the title suggests, and has a dark heaviness to the composition. The bottom third of the work is shaded black and pulls the eye down, like an anchor. The markings Miró made towards the top of the piece draw the gaze up and out of the work, like energy being expelled forcefully. The feeling of simultaneously being dragged down and held back by anger and yet exploding with rage at the same time is expressed through Miró’s artistic choices in this work. L'Enragé (The Enraged) is an incredible example of Joan Miró’s depth and genius with translating emotions into shape and color.

Created in 1967, this color etching and aquatint is hand-signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma De Maiorca, 1983) in pencil in the lower right and numbered from the edition of 75, published by Maeght Publisher, Paris.
