Historical Description

The combination of various mediums in Joan Miró’s L’Astre du Labyrinthe, 1967, yields a visually complex image, which attests to Miró’s masterful handling of different artistic techniques. The use of carborundum adds a uniquely textured surface that deepens the colors as well as the physical dimensionality of the work. The carborundum printmaking process involves using an abrasive ground to etch into the plate, which yields a granulated surface once printed. The resulting roughness adds textural depth to the otherwise two-dimensional medium of printmaking, which enhances the colors and forms of the composition. The varying degrees of color saturation in Joan Miró’s L’Astre du Labyrinthe, 1967, further contributes to the intricacy of the work. A solid black circular form is loosely enclosed by a red ring then a green one, creating an abstract focal point similar in effect to the way a face grabs attention in representational portraiture. The splash of azure that fills the center of the composition is transparent and layered, adding more depth and energy to the overall work. Meandering through the image, a thin black line ties the other elements of the composition together. The harmonious combination of texture and color in L’Astre du Labyrinthe, 1967 showcases Joan Miró’s masterful handling of different printmaking techniques.
