Historical Description

Joan Miró L'Aïeule devant la Mer (The Grandmother by the Sea), 1969 is a large-scale work showcasing the artist’s recognizable abstract style. Dark, calligraphic lines decorate the page whilst vibrant bursts of green, blue and red heighten the visual contrast present. Behind the central image is a subtle grey shade which appears loosely brushed onto the page. Within the shades of color are additional lines which form to resemble either girids or curious characters. Like many of Miró’s other works, this image includes colorful dots and the star pattern behind the central figure. The artist pioneered surrealist automatism, a method of painting in which an image was conceived “randomly” in order to express the inner workings of the psyche. Truly, this work is quite hypnotic. It is intended to allow viewers to slowly digest the image and mold it with their own imagination. Rather than pursue pure visual pleasure, Miró actually seeks to provoke subconscious exploration.

Created in 1969, this original color etching and aquatint  and carborundum with an Arches France watermark is hand-signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right margin. Numbered from the edition of 75 in pencil in the lower left margin. Published by Maeght Éditeur, Paris and printed by Morsang, Paris.
