Historical Description

A marvelous character of Miró’s imagination appears dramatically before our eyes. Ferocious and fearsome, the creature is wide mouthed, showing its sharp teeth and sharp claws. Its eye is given a vibrant shade of red, easily the central feature of the image. The white coloration of the character’s head against a black background contrasts wonderfully to make the image ever more memorable.

Created in 1976, this color etching and aquatint on wove paper is hand signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) in white crayon in the lower right. Inscribed ‘H.C’ (Hors de Commerce) in white crayon in the lower left, aside from the edition of fifty; published by Maeght, Paris.
