Joan Miró Hommage a San Lazzaro, Pl. 2, 1977 is a striking example of the way Miró elevates line by treating it as the subject of the work itself. In the center of the composition lies a wavy vertical line crossed by a short line near the top and capped by a solid circular form. This simple linear configuration constitutes the image of this work. Such a humble illustration attests to Miró’s playful confidence as an artist as well as his ability to make a subject out of pure line. The majority of the composition is filled with the artist’s signature. The mere size of the signature inadvertently makes it part of the image, filling the negative space with a literal impression of the artist. In this way, Miró makes himself the subject of the image, as the signature takes on equal if not greater presence than the image itself.
