Historical Description

Frank Stella Stubb and Flask Kill a Right Whale (Dome), from Moby Dick Domes series, 1992; Frank Stella describes his Moby Dick series as a kind of tribute to the abstract expressionists; "They're still the generation I admire. This is paying my debt, or not so much paying my debt as expressing my admiration for the abstract expressionist generation that I grew up with and that I admired the most, and that I still admire." In this work, taken from the title of one the chapters, the admiration is loud and clear. With a seeming spontaneousness and almost lyrical play on the novel mixed with a raw creativity and emotion, a captivating composition unfolds before our eyes. As beautiful hues of blues, reds, and greens mix together with subtle shapes and geometric configurations we are forced to be explorers ourselves, lost in the sea of Stella’s creation.

Created in 1992, this relief-printed etching, aquatint and engraving in colors is on shaped TGL handmade, hand-colored paper. Hand- signed and dated by Frank Stella (Massachusetts, 1936 - ) in pencil, this work is numbered from the edition of 27 and is published by Tyler Graphics Ltd., Mount Kisco, New York.
