Arman Discordia nell’Armonia (Discord in Harmony), 1990 is a sculpture comprised of a theatrical assemblage of figures and musical instruments to comment on the destructive nature of mass production and consumption. By slicing two male figures and several musical instruments into sections and rearranging these pieces into a new, discordant alignment, Arman makes a strong statement about the consequences of mass production and over-consumption. This message is intensified by his selection of two exemplars of classical beauty and harmony: the male figure and musical instruments, particularly the horn and cello, a praised motif in Arman’s work. By strategically slicing both, Arman redefines the figures’ beauty and mutes the instruments, rendering both to reinvent our perception of harmony. This exemplary sculpture shows how effective the deconstruction of elements can be in presenting a societal issue and challenging the viewer to thinking critically. This creative process redefines assemblages and secures Arman’s status as an innovative conceptional artist at the forefront of contemporary art.
Created in 1990, Arman Discordia nell’Armonia (Discord in the Harmony) is a cast bronze sculpture with green patina. This work is incised with the signature of Fernandez Arman (Nice 1928 - New York City 2005) and numbered from the edition of 8.
