Historical Description

A wonderfully detailed and charismatic portrait, this exquisite work illustrates the technical mastery and artistic vision of Van Dyck. De Moncada's stately yet approachable expression reflects Van Dyck's refined ability to comfort and relax his subjects, resulting in a realistic and acute portrait. De Moncada was the 3rd Marquis of Aytona as well as a Spanish diplomat, soldier, and writer of the early 17th century. He was also a governor of the Spanish Netherlands. Van Dyck depicts him as a man of merit. He holds a medallion that has been tied around his neck, perhaps an award received for valor in battle or wisdom in political affairs. His right hand rests lightly atop a piece of paper, representing his skill as a writer.

This portrait is a Mauquoy-Hendrickx State V ( of VIII) before the Giles Hendrickx edition, engraved by Lucas Vorsterman (Zaltbommel, 1595 - Antwerp, 1675) in collaboration with Anthony van Dyck (Antwerp, 1559 - London, 1641) as part of his Iconographie series of engraved portraits of famous people at the time. The plate has been marked in the lower right of the plate "D.A. Van Dyck Eques Pinxit" and "Vorsterman fculpsit." Beneath the engraved portrait is the inscription: EXCELL.MVS D.FRANCISCVS DE MONCADA, MARCHIO AYTONÆ, COMES OSSONÆ, VICE- | COMES CABRERÆ ET BAAS, MAGNVS SENESCALCVS REGNI ARRAGONIÆ, PHILIPPO IV. | HISPANIAR. INDIARVMQ, REGI A CONSILIIS STATVS, EIVSDEMQ LEGATVS EXTRAORDIN. ET | SVPREMVS MILITIÆ TERRA MARIQ IN BELGIO PRÆEFECTVS.
