Historical Description

In this moving depiction we witness the anointing of Saul as King of Israel. This has particular spiritual importance because unlike other nations, Israel is a holy nation whose people belong solely to God. Therefore the anointing is necessary as it is God’s permission for Saul to rule. Chagall as a religious man knew the importance of such an act and the outcome, as in the Biblical stories Saul becomes a wicked man. However here and now, in this beautiful composition, the anointing is created in such tender soft strokes that one can feel an uplifting spirit. One made more prominent by Chagall’s skill as a colorist in the use of light yellow and red coloring in each of the men, perhaps signifying what is to come.

Created in 1958, this engraving with watercolor is from a series of 105 images that Chagall created for his Bible series. Numbered from the edition of 100 in pencil in the lower left margin, this work bears Marc Chagall's (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) hand written monogram in pencil in the lower right margin. Tériade, Paris, published this folio, and Raymond Haasen, Paris, did the printing for the series.
