Historical Description

Sonia Delaunay-Terk Carrés magiques, as she is often called to distinguish her from her husband, made a name for herself as a visual artist and graphic designer. Turning to fabric design when she needed supplemental income, she discovered a passion for clothes and costumes. Biographers Baron and Damase write that her designs embody the preoccupations for her contemporaries in Cubism, Futurism and Russian Suprematism. Her fabric work responded intimately to her times, with its, "bright colors reminiscent of Orphism and 'simultaneous contrast' (84). Carrés magiques, created after one of the artist's rhythmically musical compositions, is a testament to the key role she holds in art of the 20th century.

Created circa 1980, this original wool tapestry was published by Artcurial. It bears the artist's initials 'SD' woven into the lower left corner on the recto; a patch sewn onto the verso is stamped again with the artist's initials and bears the edition number HF 2/10.
