Evoking the glamorization of Marilyn Monroe’s tragic life, Russell Young figures the bombshell as the archetypal weeping woman in Russell Young New York Crying Marilyn.

Cropped from tabloid fodder and enlarged to larger than life proportions, Young presents a close-up and isolated composition that allows for an almost too intimate gaze. With her remorseful expression veiled in diamond dust and hue of soft candy pink, exploring the emotional potential of color and texture, this piece delicately balances his subject’s undeniable beauty with the star’s internal sadness.
