Historical Description

Roy Lichtenstein Brushstroke Still Life with Coffee Pot, 1997 integrates bright brushstrokes with Lichtenstein’s bold cartooned style, distorting spatial orientation through the layering of two different visual effects. The coffee pot, after which this artwork is named, sits slightly off-center to the right of the composition and is rendered in Lichtenstein’s cartooned style. The table beneath the coffee pot appears to have some dimensionality through the effect of the fading Ben Day dots on its surface to the left, but its cropped angle and slight tilt give it an ambiguous sense of perspectival depth. The red, orange, and yellow brushstrokes that play on the tabletop create a fiery focal point in a composition dominated by black and white. Although Lichtenstein passed away before he had the chance to complete the hand-painted strokes on this work, Roy Lichtenstein Brushstroke Still Life with Coffee Pot, 1997 still offers a complex study of inanimate objects in a bold composition.

Created in 1997, Roy Lichtenstein Brushstroke Still Life with Coffee Pot, 1997 is a color screenprint on honeycomb-core aluminum panel inset in a white wood frame. This work is numbered from the edition of 10.
