Historical Description

RETNA Untitled 6, 2012 features a combination of scripts to create a unique visual language influenced by Gothic script, Egyptian Hieroglyphics, Hebrew, Blackletter and Arabic calligraphy. In this bold large-scale piece, RETNA  incorporates elements of these writings into a methodical arrangement of letterforms to create a visual masterpiece. Against a matte gray, his unique language stands out in white decorated with glitter that radiates drama and glamour. The text effuses with ancient echoes, encouraging the viewer to ponder the historic linguistic references within a contemporary context. Stylized circles and lines contrast eloquently with drips of paint, attesting to RETNA’s underlying expressionism and artistic freedom. A fine example of RETNA’s signature style, this compelling work evidences the artist’s rise to fame in the international art world.

Created in 2012, this acrylic on canvas is hand-signed by RETNA (Los Angeles 1979 - )  in ink on verso. This is a unique and original work.
