Historical Description

Pierre-Auguste Renoir brings his subjects to life in Renoir La Danse à la Campagne (Dance in the Country), 2e planche, c. 1890, so much so that you can almost imagine the music.

The people depicted in this etching are Renoir’s brother Edmond and Suzanne Valadon. Using swift and careful lines, Renoir creates areas of dark and light that add incredible depth to the image. The lines are expressive of movement, and Renoir captures this lively moment in time. The woman’s dress sweeps up as she is spun around the dance floor by the gentleman. His own coat flairs out as they dance. These little moments of movement bring truth to the entire etching.

Created circa 1890, this etching on wove paper is stamped with the signature of Pierre-Auguste Renoir (Limoges, 1841- Cagnes-sur-Mer, 1919) in the lower right margin.
