Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Le peintre et son modèle (The Painter and the Model), 1965 is an exquisite linocut which showcases the recurring theme of the artist and his muse. To the left of the image, a nude woman sits with her legs crossed and her eyes cast downwards to the side. Her Hair is depicted as a mess of curls. The artist sits in front of her, he has a full head of hair and a beard. He is fully dressed, appearing to wear a jacket with a striped shirt and laced shoes. He stares down intently at his notepad, clearly focusing on transferring her figure onto the paper. Behind them is a table with a bowl and a cup which situate the figures in the artist’s home or studio. This image is undoubtedly drawn from Picasso’s own life as an artist. It is well known that Picasso was a lover of feminine beauty and took on many muses himself. Perhaps this image is how the artist envisioned himself at his craft.

Created in 1965, this linocut on Arches paper is hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881- Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin. Numbered from the edition of 160 in pencil in the lower left margin (there are also 35 artist’s proofs); printed by Hidalgo Arnéra.
