Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Jacqueline au cheveux lisses (Grand Tête de Femme), 1962 is a bright and unique depiction of Pablo Picasso’s last and final muse, Jacqueline Roque. Though she never sat and posed for him, she occupied his mind so intensely that her image always appeared when he began to paint women. In the traditional cubist style, the right side of her face is in profile facing towards the left, along with her eye and mouth turned the same direction. The left side of her visage faces straight forward, her eye wide, enlarged, and curious as her glassy gaze glances out towards the viewer. The background, a deep ochre, acts as the shading of her skin, lines that highlight the shadows across her face. Her hair cascades around her face, streaks of ochre and burnt sienna creating the illusion of strands of hair. This linocut is a mesmerizing experience into the allure of Jacqueline, and the profound inspiration and influence she held over Picasso.

Created in 1962, this linoleum cut on Arches wove paper is hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 - Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin and is numbered from the edition of 50 in the lower left margin.
