Historical Description

Pablo Picasso's Femme couchée et guitariste (Lying woman and guitar), 1959 is a beautiful linocut print that features the artist's famous reductive drawing style. The work is a perfect example of Picasso's experimentation and innovation in the linocut printing technique. The print's composition centers on two figures, a woman lying in the nude in the background and a man playing guitar in the foreground. Both the guitar and nude women were common subjects for Picasso's work throughout his career. The work is printed in warm browns and beiges with simple black lines creating the design of the composition. Femme couchée et guitariste (Lying woman and guitar), 1959 is an incredible showcase of Picasso's linocut printing skill and his creative vision for composition.

Created in 1959, this linocut printed in colors on Arches wove paper is hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881- Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from 50 in pencil in the lower left margin.
