In the top left corner, a sculpture of a bust that appears in other works in this series over the other figures in the work. Directly below the sculpture lays a nude woman being cradled in the arms of a Minotaur. A flutist and another woman face them on the right side of the composition adjacent to a table topped with libations. In the distance behind the figures in the foreground, the artist has rendered a large portrait that gazes beyond the atmosphere of the work and directly engages the viewer. This work is one of 100 in the artist’s Suite Vollard, a series that spans seven years from 1930 to 1937 and is named after the series’ publisher, Ambroise Vollard.
