Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Accord entre les Guerriers de Sparte et d’Athènes (Agreement between the Warriors of Sparta and Athens), Pl. 5 from Lysistrata, 1934 is an illustration of a scene from Lysistrata by Aristophanes. The play takes place during the Peloponnesian War when a woman, Lysistrata, leads the women in a sex strike until the men are able to make peace. This scene illustrated the peace accord between the warring Sparta and Athens, and presumably the end of the women withholding sex. Picasso brilliantly executes the image with men decked in very detailed and decorated armor and gets to the point of it all by showing the handshake front and center. The figures are rendered magnificently, and the view truly understands Picasso’s search for extreme detail in his work.

Created in 1973, this etching on wove paper is hand signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881- Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower left margin and numbered from the edition of 150 in pencil in the lower left corner.
