Pablo Picasso Visage no. 193 (Face no. 193), 1963
In a similar vein of his renowned portraits, Picasso transforms a simple ceramic plate into a whimsical portrait displaying dimensionality and expression. Perhaps recalling the Cubist style that Picasso is known for, Picasso models his subject from a distorted perspective. With an angular nose, geometric shapes form the side of his face. Juxtaposing with these harsh lines, are whimsically drawn eyes and slight smile, lightening the mood of this quaint character.
Created in 1963, this Madoura round plate of white earthenware clay with decorations in engobe and enamel (blue, black red) is incised on the verso and numbered from the edition of 150. This work features the handwritten inscription: ' N.193 | EDITION | PICASSO | MADOURA' on the verso.
