Historical Description

Picasso Ceramic Visage no. 130 (Face no.130), 1963 is a wonderful artwork that showcases the artist's mastery of portraiture, featuring a charming portrait in glazed enamel, Madoura pottery. Similar to his other renowned portraits, Picasso transforms a plain, otherwise ordinary ceramic plate into a playful and quizzical human face with an extraordinary presence.  The character’s dark eyebrows are furrowed, as if puzzling over an idea or question. This face is undoubtedly male as Picasso has chosen to paint an over-sized and extravagant blue mustache at its center. Below the mustache, black painted dots indicate a hint of stubble which further identifies this masculine portrait while also suggesting this character has a rugged past and disheveled appearance. Bisecting the plate along the diameter, a green nose takes shape alongside red and yellow blushed cheeks elevates the clownish appearance of this ceramic. This Picasso ceramic is sure to delight those attracted to humor and color. Adding to this artworks appeal is the exquisite way which Picasso embraces the decoration inherent to the ceramic medium.  The striking details described earlier pop with brilliant contrast against the bright white enamel of the ceramic surface highlighting the glossy sheen of round earthenware plate.

Created in 1963, this Madoura round plate of white earthenware clay with decoration in engobes and enamel (black, green, blue, yellow and red) under glaze is numbered from the edition of 500 on the verso. This work features the handwritten inscription: ' N.130 | EDITION | PICASSO | MADOURA' on the verso.
