Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Small Face, 1968-1969

Diagonal lines shoot out from this central, diamond shaped face, reminiscent of feathers or perhaps a lion's mane. The Indian's facial details - eyes, nose, and mouth - are complemented by the curves and valleys of the impression itself whose finished gloss reflects light, causing the face to shimmer. The central image is framed by simple, grooved lines with dots of blue in the corners, and a white wash covers the image sporadically, adding a sense of motion to the piece.

Created in 1968-1969, this square plaque of red earthenware clay, engobe ground, engraving enhanced with oxides (white, moss-green, blue) under partial brushed glaze is from the edition of 100. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
