Picasso showcases his mastery of painting on ceramics as he drafts a simple face with a calm and content expression. Set against a dark, black glaze and shiny background, the brilliant white, red, and green hues seem to leap from the plate, as they contrast nicely throughout. The rosy-cheeked faun appears as if peacefully drifting off to slumber with his or her eyes closed.
Created in 1948, this plate of white earthenware clay with decoration in engobes (red, green, white, bright black ground) is knife engraved under glaze. From the edition of 100, this work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'D'APRES PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
