Historical Description

Pablo Picasso ceramic Profil de Jacqueline (Jacqueline’s Profile), 1956, represents a labor of love. Utilizing simple, clean-cut lines, Picasso creates an iconic image of his second wife Jacqueline. Picasso's geometric portrayal of Jacqueline in profile appears somewhat hieroglyphic in nature; with her decorated, long hair, large eyes, and triangular nose, Jacqueline bears a resemblance to an Egyptian pharaoh. Her carefully etched hair is kept back by a patterned scarf. It also appears she has a flower tucked behind her ear, its stem, reaching long past her face. She is strikingly beautiful as she gazes forward with a tranquil yet adoring expression on her face. The viewer can almost imagine that this loving look was one reserved for Picasso alone. The outlines of Jacqueline's profile are slightly raised adding a sense of depth to the piece and causing her profile to pop out against the white background. Picasso perfectly accentuates the geometric form of Jacqueline's exquisite face by placing her in the center of the dish, contrasting the angular curves of her profile against the gentle curve of the ceramic dish. Picasso's innovative use of texture allows for the dish to become three-dimensional, contributing an additional element of intrigue to this already captivating work.

Created in 1956, this Madoura round/square dish of white earthenware clay is stamped with the 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' and 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' pottery stamps and inscribed 'R.A. 100' on the underside of the dish. Numbered from the edition of 100.
