Pablo Picasso Grasshopper on a Branch, 1955

Perched delicately upon a branch, Picasso's grasshopper appears in a somewhat precarious position, as if the wind could blow him away at any moment. Detailed lines in relief define the grasshopper's shell antennae, legs, and body; the monochromatic red hue on the front of this striking cupel encourages us to focus on Picasso's use of relief rather than his use of color. Illustrating Picasso's technical skill and mastery of the medium, this ceramic is desirable for its bold iconography and rich sense of relief and texture.

Created in 1955, this round cupel of red earthenware clay with black enamel on the underside is from the edition of 100. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
