Historical Description

Picasso was incredibly always innovative in his approach to ceramic. Grand Vase Pékiné (Big candy-striped vase), 1961 A.R. 370 is an excellent example of how the master imbues creativity and personality into his works. Extremely rare, this vase is from a small edition of 25.

The shape of the vase is quite wide, allowing for maximum visual detail. On one side of the vase is the face of a faun, its eyes cast downwards whilst two sinuous horns sit delicately atop its head. On the opposite of the vase is a face encircled by dots and decorated with bold stripes. A bulbous nose protrudes from the face, creating a whimsical character. Additionally, the stripes are the most alluring given their texture. The vase is endlessly fascinating as each side showcases its individual aesthetic quality. Naturally, Picasso inspires viewers to consider the multidimensional facets of his work.

Created in 1956, this Madoura turned vase of white earthenware clay is numbered from the edition of 25. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and ‘EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO’ pottery stamps on the underside.
