Historical Description

Pablo Picasso ceramic Fish Subject (Sujet poisson), 1954 exhibits a creatively unique likeness to the fish from which it was inspired. This animated caricature comes to life in this decorative, hand-made pitcher. The likeness is what makes the work particularly noteworthy. The fluted shape of this pitcher echoes that of a real fish, as the spout narrows to form the nose and the opening fans outward to form the tail. The tail is playfully embellished with bold black strokes of color. Each feature of the fish is colored similarly, creating a striking contrast against the rich shade of the red earthenware clay. The handle serves as a dorsal while the wide-eyed fish himself smiles out at us in an expressive gesture. Brightly lit eyes, a grinning smile, and fluttering fins are all features of this Fish Subject that refuse to go unnoticed. This pitcher further proves that Picasso is a master of imbuing charm and playfulness in every medium. Viewers are made aware of the dichotomy between utilitarian objects and works of art. Finally, the decorative engobe details enliven this ceramic pitcher, giving it a whimsical energy and a humorous likeness to a real fish, making it a charming and thought provoking addition to any collection.

Created in 1954, this Madoura turned pitcher of red earthenware clay with decoration in engobes (black, white) is inscribed 'EDITION PICASSO MADOURA' with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' pottery stamp on the underside; from the edition of 500.
