Historical Description

Raised surface lines create a playful figure of a fish in this whimsical artwork by Picasso. With spiked fins and a spotted skin, this fantastical fish feels prehistoric. Warm hues of ethereal white and details in low relief pay homage to fossils, nature's preserved images, which subsist of the same natural materials that Picasso refines and elevates into masterpieces of artwork.

Created in 1955, this Madoura round cupel of white earthenware clay, engraving accentuated with oxidized paraffin, glaze bath; black enamel underside (ivory, brown, green, bronze-colored black) is from the edition of 100. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
