Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Face, 1963

Utilizing simple, jagged lines and a strong sense of texture, Picasso creates an intriguing face. He strips this full-face face down to the basic elements: a mouth, nose, and eyes. The nose consists of two parallel vertical lines while the eyes are tiny circles and the mouth, a slightly upturned horizontal line. Diagonal lines slash across this face, encouraging us to use our imaginations to create an identity for these marks, whether they are facial hair or battle scars.

Created in 1963, this round plate of red earthenware clay is from the edition of 100. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
