Pablo Picasso Face, 1963

Utilizing the simplistic design motifs frequently found in his ceramics, Picasso creates an exquisite plate that plays with our notion of what is functional and what is art. Monochromatic and simplistic in design, this remarkable work says more with less. Raised lines in relief define the round eyes, L-shaped nose, and mouth of this curious face, as Picasso once again exemplifies his talent at conveying human expression. Additional strokes in relief encompass the border of this magnificent plate, perhaps suggesting the subject's flowing hair.

Created in 1963, this original round plate of red earthenware clay is from the edition of 100. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
