Historical Description

A lively rendition of an owl, Pablo Picasso ceramic Chouette (Wood-Owl), 1969 A.R 605 is a beautiful bird. Careful use of engraving and engobe decoration create textured feathers that line the rounded body of the bird. The eyes are also engraved, giving them a depth and a look of concentration that intensifies the emotional state of the owl. One aspect that makes Picasso ceramics so special is the link between the physical form of the ceramic and the decorative scheme chosen. In this case, a vase creates the perfect body for an owl. The small foot of the vase becomes the perched feet of the owl, and the circular addition to the back stands in as the tail. The lip of the vase is punctuated by a smooth spout, which marks the beak of the bird. We get the feeling that the owl fully embodies this vase. The beautiful and understated color palate adds more realism to Picasso ceramic Wood-Owl (Chouette), 1969 A.R. 605, and it truly comes to life in front of our eyes.

Created in 1969, this madoura turned vase of white earthenware clay with engobe decoration (brown, black) engraved by boring-rod under partial brushed glaze with black patina is inscribed ‘Edition Picasso’ and ‘Madoura’ and stamped with the ‘EDITION PICASSO’ and ‘MADOURA PLEIN FEU’ pottery stamps on the underside; numbered from the edition of 500.
