Historical Description

Picasso Chouette Marron/Noir (Maroon/Black Wood Owl), 1969 is a charming and delicate turned vase that inhabits all the qualities unique to Picasso's limited œuvre of ceramic works. Of the ceramic medium, Picasso held a special fascination for its multidimensional possibilities. His ceramic works all contain the whimsy and charm for which the artist is known. Above all, Picasso was a great animal lover as bulls, birds and goats regularly feature in his artworks. Of all the animals, Picasso admired the owl the most for its wisdom and delicate nature. Therefore it is not surprising that Picasso is especially known for his series of owl ceramics. Undeniably, Picasso sets this work apart from the rest with its painterly, detailed qualities. An owl with brown striped and dotted feathers appears as if standing before us. With whimsical, oxide decoration, Picasso incorporates traditional features of a vase and pitcher to create an owl's abstracted form. This is a truly stunning work best admired and appreciated in person, as one can experience its full, three-dimensional effect by observing its features from all sides. Additionally, the white enamel allows the ceramic to subtly gleam under the light, making the owl's features truly stand out.

Created in 1952, this turned vase of white earthenware clay with decoration in oxides (brown, black) is knife engraved on white enamel. Numbered from the edition of 100, this work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EDITION PICASSO' pottery stamps on the underside, along with the handwritten inscription 'EDITION PICASSO MADOURA' in black.
