Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Cavalier et cheval (Cavalier and horse), 1952 A.R. 138 attests to Picasso's sensitivity to form and design in his ceramic creations. The physical shape of the ceramic consists of a plump, horizontally-oriented base that narrows into a vertically-oriented spout at one end. A sturdy handle curves from the top of the ceramic's base to the back of its spout, creating an elegant arch that emphasizes the rounded qualities of the ceramic as a whole. For the surface decoration in Pablo Picasso Cavalier et cheval (Cavalier and horse), 1952 A.R. 138, a male figure is painted on front of the narrow neck of the vessel. The elongated spout accommodates the lanky body of the male figure and bulges outward slightly at the figure's hips. The figure of a horse is rendered along the side of the base, which seamlessly integrates the horse's rounded torso with the curve of the ceramic. Pablo Picasso Cavalier et cheval (Cavalier and horse), 1952 A.R. 138 offers a striking example of how Picasso's ceramics masterfully allow form to enhance design.

Created in 1952, Pablo Picasso Cavalier et cheval (Cavalier and horse), 1952 A.R. 138 is a white earthenware clay ceramic with decoration in oxides (black, brown, blue) and knife engraved on white enamel. This work is from the edition of 300.
