Pablo Picasso Cavalier and Horse, 1968-1969 captures the imagination by illustrating an ambiguous figure in the center of this plaque. Exhibiting his love of experimenting with various art media, this piece is rendered with strong contrast and lyrical figurative elements. Set against a brilliant white background, the cavalier sits astride his horse. The horse rears up slightly, as if preparing to gallop off into the distance. A thick, dark border frames the work, encasing the escaping cavalier, with small circles lining the frame. Globs of blue and white are layered together with messy dots, placed in small sections that allow the natural hue of the clay to peek through. Created in 1968-1969, this red earthenware clay square plaque with engobe ground, engraving enhanced with oxides (white, green, blue) under partial brushed glaze with black patina is from the edition of 100. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
