Pablo Picasso Bull, 1954

Exhibiting his love of experimenting with various art media, Picasso renders this piece with strong contrast and distinct figurative elements. Set on a brilliantly glazed white and green background, a majestic bull gazes calmly off to the side. Picasso highlights the physical strength of the bull, delineating the bull's powerful musculature and sharp, curved horns. This bull appears as a force of nature rather than an amiable creature.

Created in 1954, this round cupel of white earthenware clay with engobe decoration (green, white, pink patina) under glaze is from the edition of 100. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the underside of the cupel.
